Stroke Heart Disease hypertension Medical Conditions

Hypertension or raised blood pressure

The heart pumps blood around the circulation at a certain pressure. The pressure varies because of the heart contracting. The 'top' value is the systolic blood pressure, and the 'bottom' value is the diastolic value

Just like in an engine, raised pressure leads to increased wear and tear- in fact hypertension is THE most important modifiable risk factor for Stroke. Everyone over 40 should have their blood pressure checked, especially if their are any other risk factors such as:

bulletFamily History
bulletDiabetes
bulletHeart Disease
bulletStroke or TIA
bulletSmoking

The BHS target blood pressure is under 135/85 mmHg for non diabetic patients and even lower for diabetic patients

White coat syndrome is a common problem- your Doctor or Nurse may not be able to tell whether your blood pressure is genuinely elevated. For this reason we recommend that

bulletanyone diagnosed with a new diagnosis of hypertension without 'outward signs' has an ambulatory blood pressure measurement over 24 hours before treatment to make sure the blood pressure is genuinely raised
bulletpatients with hypertension consider measuring their own blood pressure using a home kit
